Cal State University Monterey Bay

Seaside, Calif. – CSU Monterey Bay head coach Jody Garry has announced the schedule for the 2008 Otter women’s volleyball team.

CSUMB opens the season hosting back-to-back tournaments beginning on Friday, August 29 and Saturday 30. Teams participating in the Otter Classic include University of North Dakota, Humboldt State University, Merrimack College, Wayne State University, and Western Oregon University. CSUMB hosts the Otter Invitational, a five-team tournament, on the following weekend.  Western Washington University, Eastern New Mexico University, William Jessup University, and CSU Stanislaus are slated to compete.

“We are fortunate to be located in a very desirable location-as we had a lot of interest in our pre season tournaments,” stated Garry. “My goal is to host two tournaments every year, which gives our team a huge advantage on training time, rest and most importantly academics before beginning the very tough CCAA.”

The Otters open up their conference play on Sept. 12, hosting 2007 CCAA Champion CSU San Bernardino at 7 p.m. in the Otter Sports Center.  CSUMB’s other key match-ups will be against CSU Pomona on Saturday night (13-5 CCAA, 21-7) and University of California, San Diego (13-5 CCAA, 20-8) on Sept. 13 and Sept. 19 respectively.

With the graduation of CCAA All-Conference second team outside hitters Brittany Etchings and Courtney Taubert, the Otters will look to Kerri Sudarsana to lead the team as a dominate right side hitter.

“Kerri had an amazing spring,” commented Garry. “She grew on and off the court and committed herself to being the best player she can be. The best has yet to be seen of Kerri and she has the heart of the team behind her.”

Returning sophomore setter Dana Grimm is pegged to run the team’s offense and served as a team captain this past spring.
