MONMOUTH, Ore. –
Cal State Monterey Bay’s women’s basketball team got its 2009-10 season off to a good start with a 66-58 victory over Western Oregon in the Phoenix Inn & Suites Invitational on Friday night.

Junior guard Michelle Santizo led the Otters with 13 points and six assists with senior guard Denelle Baker chipping in 12 points and four assists.  Junior center Julie Heurung pulled down a game-high nine rebounds along with her six points.

A 5-0 run to end the first half gave the Otters a 37-24 lead into the break.

The Otters outrebounded the Wolves 34-28 while shooting 52.4 percent from the field.  CSUMB shot 54.5 percent (6-11) from beyond the arc with Baker going 3-for-4.

"This was a great way to open our season," said head coach Renee Jimenez. "Our guards stepped up and made huge shots for us and our post really controlled the boards on both ends of the court.

"This win was an absolute team effort."

The Wolves were led by Katie Torland with 16 points and five rebounds.

CSUMB closes out its northwest trip on Saturday, Nov. 21 against Northwest Nazarene.  Tip-off is at 1 p.m.
