SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team hosted a free basketball clinic on Sunday, Nov. 29 at the Otter Sports Center. Boys and girls from the local area participated in what was the first event in a year round series of “FUN-damental” sport clinics that will be offered by CSUMB Athletics.
The free clinics are a benefit of the newly created
Otter Pups Kids Club, the official kids club of CSUMB Athletics. Other benefits include free admission to all Otters' regular season home games (with a paying adult), a birthday card from the CSUMB mascot Monte Rey, autograph sessions with CSUMB student-athletes and more. This free youth program is made possible through the continued partnership between CSUMB Athletics and the
Monterey Peninsula Foundation.
Members of the CSUMB men's basketball team spent more than two hours in a fun and educational setting with these young athletes. Under the direction of head coach
Rob Bishop, kids learned the proper form of shooting and dribbling as well good teamwork skills.
“This was the first of several free clinics we hope to run this year and it was a big success,” said head coach #Rob Bishop#. “We had close to 50 kids. It was a great opportunity for my program to give back to the community.
“Our student-athletes and all the kids involved had a great time. “
“It was great to have the opportunity to work one-on-one with the kids from the area,” said junior #Warren Freeman#. “I hope to see their enthusiastic faces in the stands on Friday and Saturday when we begin our conference schedule.”
The Otters begin their California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) schedule this Friday and Saturday, hosting Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State respectively. The women's team will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. with the men's squad following with a 7:30 p.m. start time.
