SEASIDE, Calif. – Cal State Monterey Bay Athletics joined up with Sodexo to collect canned food for the annual Helping Hands Across America Food Drive at the women's basketball game on Nov. 16 against Hawaii Pacific.
On the last day of the food drive, the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) sponsored and organized the event by asking community members to donate canned food for admission to the Women's basketball game which was a slam dunk. Nearly 200 lbs of food was collected on that night.
"Our student-athletes and coaches came together for a great cause with the Helping Hands Food Drive," said Associate Athletic Director #Stephanie Duke#. "They brought in much needed food and have been outstanding in their efforts of community outreach."
Helping Hands Across America Food Drive is an annual Food Drive put on every October/November by Sodexo. This year, students had the ability to donate meal plan blocks which Campus Dining converted into food. Food was converted into bulk items such as bags of rice, cake and brownie mix, canned milk, vegetables, etc.
“With grateful thanks to the campus community and Otter Athletics, our Helping Hands Food Drive donated 9x the amount than last year,” said
Jennifer Harris, Sodexo's campus marketing and sustainability manager. "Thank you CSUMB for helping us STOP HUNGER in the Monterey County."
