Ricky Stockton were named CSUMB Co-Male Athlete of the Year while softball player
Shae Olds was selected Female Athlete of the Year at the Otters’ year-end awards banquet held at the University Center.
The first male basketball player to reach the 1,000 career milestone, Mitchell helped lead his team to the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championship game, making program history with two wins in the tournament. An All-CCAA first team selection, Joe was second in rebounding and field goal percentage while finishing 18th in scoring.
Stockton, a senior from Salinas, was the CCAA Tournament individual medalist on April 20-21 in Paso Robles at the Hunter Ranch Golf Course. Next weekend, Stockton and his teammates will compete in the Super Regional tournament held in Lincoln, Neb. where they will attempt to qualify for the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
Only a sophomore, Olds has helped lead her team to a 20-12 CCAA record, 34-25 overall record, and 2nd place in the CCAA. Last weekend she broke the CCAA single season and CSUMB homerun record when she knocked her 15th HOMERUN of the year. She is third in the CCAA with a 407 batting average, has 66 hits, 43 RBI’s. Unfortunately, Olds was not able to attend the banquet due to being in Stockton with her teammates, competing in the CCAA Tournament. The No. 2 seed, the Otters will open up the tournament against UC San Diego today at 7 p.m.
Dana Andrews a senior women’s basketball athlete, was honored with the Outstanding Senior Scholar-Athlete Award. Andrews, graduating with a degree in Business this May, has set every record on the court, in the classroom, and in the community during her four-year tenure at CSUMB. Dana has maintained a 3.66 GPA while leading the women’s basketball program to its most successful season in school history, was the first male or female basketball player to reach the 1000 point career milestone, was an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection, was a three-time All-CCAA selection, and also leaves with numerous other career and single season records for the women’s basketball program.

Marie Beard were named Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year. Sophomores are majoring in Business, Milligan carries a 3.91 GPA and Beard currently has a 3.96 GPA.
The CCAA Dr. Hal Charnofsky Male and Female Award which is given to a student-athlete who has both outstanding academic and campus community achievements was awarded to men’s soccer player

Rigali currently serves as the Associated Students Public Relations Director, as Chair of the Blue Crue, served as the President of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) in 2007-08, and was invited to attend the student leadership conference in Champaign, Ill. Rigali has a 3.33 GPA, and is majoring in Human Communication.
Deneke, a member of SAAC, has already begun her professional career in the Strength and Conditioning field, her research on volleyball players has been accepted to present at the National Strength and Conditioning Association this summer in Las Vegas which is an unbelievable accomplishment for an undergraduate student, and she has had a huge impact on both the Kinesiology and Athletic Department in two short years. Deneke has a 3.71 GPA, and is majoring in Kinesiology.

Bill Paulson was awarded Athletic Director's Legacy Award. This past June, Paulson retired after 12 very successful years at the helm of the Otter men’s golf program and also as the Director of Golf at CSUMB. He started both the men’s and women’s golf programs here at CSUMB and is the reason that both programs have a solid foundation. When CSUMB was a member of the NAIA, he received two Cal-Pac Coach of the Year honors. Last year, in the first season eligible for postseason, he helped lead the men’s golf team to NCAA Regionals.
2007-08 All-Sports Banquet

While softball, men's golf and women's golf all completed in post-season NCAA Championships the CSU Monterey Bay Athletic department closed out its year with its annual banquet to honor the achievements of it's student-athletes. To start off,
Kiley Stout (pictured) of volleyball accepted the award for Fenale Scholar Athlete of the Year. Stout is graduating after maintaining a 3.76 GPA and majoring in Kinesiology. She also was awarded with the Dean's List several times in her tenure at CSUMB. The Male side of the award went to both
Sean Kwasnicki (Soccer) and
Daniel Barras (Baseball). Kwasnicki played defender on the soccer team and had a 3.64 GPA while majoring Kinesiology. He has made the dean’s list all six semesters he has been at CSUMB. Barras has a 3.65 GPA and has made the dean’s list five times while majoring in Kinesiology. He had a .953 fielding percentage and made 50 assists, fourth highest on the team.

Kyle Satow was named Male Athlete of the Year, while water polo player
Chelsea Laning and
Homa Shafii of the softball team were named co-Female Athlete of the Year. Satow was a two-year team captain on the soccer team and finished his collegiate career at or near the top of every statistical category in the CSUMB Soccer record books. He was selected to All-CCAA First Team and was an All-CCAA Second Team selection in 2006. He was also named to the 2007 Daktronics All Far West Region second team. Satow is majoring in Kinesiology and is maintaining a 3.45 Grade Point Average.
Laning scored 95 goals this season and ranks in the top 10 nationally in scoring. She made the All-Western Water Polo Association second team this season and is a three-time All-American. She is the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer with 479 career goals. Laning was also named Monterey County's Best Female Athlete earlier this year by the Monterey County Weekly. She is the only member of the water polo team to play all four years for CSUMB, joining the program in its first year.
Shafii was her team’s offensive MVP, hitting .339 with 5 Homers and 31 RBIs, leading the squad all the way to the NCAA Division II West Regional tournament. A senior majoring in Integrated Studies, she finished the season with a stellar .457 On Base Percentage. She was selected to the All-CCAA second team and made the CCAA Championship All-Tournament team as well. She was named CCAA Player of the Week for Feb. 4-10.
Brittany Etchings was awarded the Outstanding Senior Scholar Athlete award to finish off the night. Etchings, a former star on the Poway High School volleyball team, will be remembered as the top volleyball player in CSU Monterey Bay's history. She finished her CSUMB career as the leader in kills (1,343) and digs (1,361). She ranks second all-time in aces with 125. She received all-conference honors in the NCAA Division II California Collegiate Athletic Association in both 2006 and 2007. Scholastically, Etchings was an even bigger star. She made the dean's list every term she attended CSUMB and finished her major in Telecommunications, Multimedia and Applied Computing with a 3.67 GPA. She never had a GPA lower than 3.4 in her four years at CSUMB. In the fall of 2005 she took 19 units and finished with a 4.0 GPA.
2006-07 All-Sports Banquet

CSUMB brought all Otter athletes together for the All Sports Banquet. Faculty, coaches, and athletes joined together to introduce new Otter Athletic Faculty, celebrate the past year, and congratulate the Otter Seniors and scholar-athletes. Over 60 senior-athletes were recognized for their contributions to the Otter community. To start off, Tyler Harvey of baseball accepted the award for Male Scholar Athlete of the Year. Tyler is graduating this summer with a 3.79 GPA in Social and Behavioral Sciences. He finished with 29 strikeouts this season in 49 innings pitched. The Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year award went to Danielle VandenBos of volleyball. Danielle currently has a 3.92 in HCOM and plans to attend law school in fall 2008. This is the third straight year Danielle has received this award.
The Male and Female Athletes of the Year were Richard Jenkins (Basketball) and Chelsea Laning (Water Polo). Richards senior year was highlighted by a school and conference record 57 points in the four overtime win against Western Oregon on December 15th. Richard led the team in points (18.2) and rebounds (6.6) and became the first Otter to make the All-CCAA first team. Chelsea, the only junior to win an award, led the country in scoring this year with 146 goals. The Otters had their best season ever, finishing 18-18 and 9th in the WWPA. Chelsea will enter her senior year with a career total of 382 goals.
The Outstanding Senior Athlete of the year was awarded to Ren Herring. He will be graduating with honors this month in business administration and is the first ever eight-semester sailor at CSUMB. As the A fleet skipper, Herring was successful in capturing CSUMBs first division win and led the team to its first ever regatta win this march in the friendly water of Monterey Harbor. Herring has skippered the A fleet division over the past four years where he and his team have qualified for the Pacific Coast Championship every year.
2005-06 All-Sports Banquet

California State University, Monterey Bay closed out the 2005-06 season with the All-Sports Banquet today. The banquet, held at the University Ballroom, had Co-Master of Ceremonies in Kelli Lyons (Women’s Cross-Country) and Brian Thompson (Men’s Golf). The presenting sponsor was Tom Cardinale of Cardinale Automotive Group.
Carli Young, who was the Female Scholar Athlete of the Year and Otter of the Year in 2001, presented the Scholar Athlete Awards. Receiving the award this year was Enrique Mendez of Men’s Basketball, and Danielle VandenBos of Volleyball. This is the second time that VandenBos has won the award. Following the awards, a lifetime pass to Otter athletic events was given to retiring Women’s Golf coach Marcia Juergens.
The Male Athlete of the Year was shared by DeVoughn Lamont (Basketball) and Kyle Satow (Soccer). Lamont averaged 20.4 points a game, led the CCAA in scoring, was third in rebounding and field goal percentage and broke the school records for single-season points (599) and single-game points (38). He leaves as the third leading scorer in CSUMB history with 1004. Satow scored 12 goals with seven assists for a total of 31 points. He was second in the CCAA in total goals, total points and game-winning goals and broke the single-season school record with six game-winning goals including the goal that won the Westminster Tournament.
Female Athlete of the Year was awarded to Alex Davis (Water Polo). She scored 27 goals with 109 assists for 136 points and added 154 steals in 34 games. An All-American candidate, Davis has led the country, in any NCAA division, in total assists and steals in each of the last two seasons. She leaves as the all-time school leader in assists (195) and steals (277) and is second in points with 237.
Andy Klingelhoefer, the Dean of Student Life, presented the Team of the Year Awards, which went to Men’s Golf and Volleyball. Golf finished strong with five top six finishes in their last six tournaments and had a team GPA of 3.16. The Otters won the Otter Invitational, beating out 11 of the top 25 teams in the nation, including six of the top eight. CSUMB closed the season with a second place finish at the CCAA Championships. Volleyball went 13-16 after a rough 3-25 season the year before. Four individual single-season school records were broken, Jenn Holda finished 11 th in the country in digs per game and they had a team GPA of 3.23.
Jared Jungwirth presented the award that he won last year, Otter of the Year. It is given to the student-athlete who has shown exemplary achievements in academics, athletics and service as well as reflecting the true spirit of “Otter Pride” and CSUMB Athletics. For the first time ever, there were co-winners with Kelli Lyons (Women's Cross Country) and Nic Torricelli (Men’s Soccer) sharing the award.
