Fall 2006 Athletic Highlights

Men's Cross Country
Omar Mendoza Finishes Eighth at Big Sur International Marathon
April 29th, 2007, CSUMB Men's Cross Country was represented well when Omar Mendoza, a rising senior from Salinas finished eighth overall with a time of 2 hours, 47 minutes and 3 seconds in the Big Sur International Marathon. He was also fifth in his 20-29 age division. His 18 weeks of 65 miles a week of training paid off well as Omar beat his target of 2:50. As his coach, Yi Mao puts it, "Omar started with a little too aggresive pace, then went smoothly through the 22nd mile. He did hit the wall where he was forced to walk for 1 or 2 minutes, but he successfully overcame it and ran strongly all the way to the finish!"
Men's Soccer
Kyle Satow Named to All-CCAA Second Team
Junior forward/midfielder Kyle Satow, of Livermore, was named to the All-CCAA second team as voted on by coaches. Satow was third in the conference with 2.84 shots per game (with a total of 54 in the season) and led the Otters in scoring with five goals on the year. He was also only one of two players to start in all 19 games in the 2006 season. Kyle led the team in nearly every statistical category last season. Satow is now tied with Nate Northup for the school's career goal record with 24.  Satow and seven other starters return for 2007 when the Otters will be eligible for the playoffs for the first time as an NCAA school.
Women's Volleyball
Brittany Etchings Named to All-CCAA First Team
Outside Hitter Brittany Etchings became the first CSU Monterey Bay Volleyball player to be named to an All-CCAA first team. Etchings, a junior from Poway, California, hit .200 this year with a team-high 337 kills. She also had 32 aces, 46 total blocks and 409 digs to help the Otters to finish in a tie for fifth-place in the CCAA. She owns the school career kills record of 1,058 and looks to add to that total in 2007. She became the first CSUMB athlete in any sport to be named first-team all conference since the Otters joined the CCAA in 2004. Etchings has also been honored twice as CCAA Player of the Week. She is the only CSUMB athlete to do so.
