Spring 2007 Athletic Highlights

Men's Baseball
Gerry Rommel & Brian Trump Make NCAA DII All-Region Team
Seniors Gerry Rommel and Brian Trump both got a nice graduation present as they were each selected for All-Region accolades. Rommel was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association Division II All-West Region Second Team as a catcher. Trump made his only season with CSUMB memorable as one of four outfielders named to the American Baseball Coaches Association All-Region Second Team. Both players were also honored only a few weeks before as they were named to All-CCAA teams. Rommel was named to the First team while Trump was named to the second team. Rommel, a senior from Laguna Niguel, led the Otters with a .380 batting average and had 41 RBI on a school-record 71 hits in the second season of CSUMB baseball. He played in all 52 games this year and started 51. Rommel was the first player to have a grand slam in CSUMB history and also set the school single-game record with five hits in his next-to-last game against Cal Poly Pomona. Trump, a transfer from UC San Diego, hit .351 and was tied for 2nd on the team with 39 RBI. He also launched eight home runs and was the first Otter to be named CCAA Player of the week following a 10-19, 6 RBI weekend at St. Martin's.
Women's Water Polo
2007 Breakthrough Season for the Program
In three years, under the direction of head coach Gary Figueroa, the CSUMB Women's Water Polo program has become one of the top ranked teams in the Wester Water Polo Association. The Otters' 18 wins in 2007 included a 6 game win streak and eclipsed the win total for the programs first two years combined. The team's progress has been due in large part to All-American Chelsea Laning's record setting individual performances. Laning, a junior from Morgan Hills, CA, led the nation, across all division, with 146 goals during the 2007 season. Laning was named an All-American after this season much like coach Figueroa whom was also on the U.S. Olympic Team twice, winning a silver metal in 1984 and being inducted into the U.S. Water Polo Hall of Fame.
Women's Golf
Lady Otters win RMAC Invitation Championships to Closeout Season
The CSUMB women’s golf team can lay claim to something no other team at the school can: a conference title. With other Otter teams not eligible for CCAA crowns and with women's golf an independent, Marianne Towersey's Otters took full advantage of an invite to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championships by placing first by four strokes over host Mesa State. It is the third title for the Otters this year, but it was the first against an all-NCAA field (Division II). The Otters had a two-round score of 625. Kierstan Capito was 2nd overall with a two round score of 7-over 151, four strokes behind medalist Marcie Hopson of Grand Canyon University (another non-RMAC invited team). Cicilia Chudivan and Lauren Grounds also placed in the top ten with a 15-over 159, good for a tie for 7th.
Women's Softball
Jessica Wardle and Ashlee Trotter Earn All-Conference Honors
Jessica Wardle and Ashlee Trotter were recognized on the All-CCAA team as announced by the conference office. Both members of the school's 100-hit club, Wardle and Trotter are the first CSUMB softball players to be honored as all-conference as CSUMB Softball finishes up its second year as a program. Wardle, a senior outfielder from Texas, was named to the first team as an Alternate, and Trotter, a sophomore from Salinas, received honorable mention. Wardle led the team in batting (63 hits, .371 average) and stolen bases (30) this season. She is also a leader in the CCAA, number 5 on the batting average chart. Trotter has started all 116 games in school history, the last 63 at third base this season. She led the team in home runs (7) and RBI (43) and is also on the CCAA top ten charts for both categories.
Co-ed Sailing
Sailing Team Has Best Season Ever
This past season started off strong for the Otters as in their first conference regatta, on February 11th, hosted by Cal Maritime, they finished with their best finish yet. After multiple races the team of Ren Herring and Chelsea Bell finished first overall with 16 points in the Varsity 'A' Division. The following month at CSUMB's own regatta the Otters finished first overall, besting varsity teams from Stanford and UCLA. The overall success of the season was enough to gain the team a spot in the Pacific Coast Co-ed Championships held in Hawai'i. At the championships they placed 10th overall against such schools as UC Santa Barbara, USC, and again UCLA and Stanford.
