SEASIDE, Calif. – Former California State Monterey Bay baseball player,
Troy Sanchez, was recently named Everett Alvarez High School's Head Varsity Baseball coach.
He started at second base in 77 games for the Otters and had a career average of .301.In his junior year, he was second on the team with 26 runs and third with 46 hits. Prior to attending CSUMB, Sanchez played two years at Chabot Community College in Hayward.
For the past two years Sanchez has helped out with the Otters.
“Troy will be good for the program,” said CSUMB head coach #Rich Aldrete#. “He knows what it takes to start a good program.”
Everett Alvarez High School's Athletic Director, Chuck Noroian said of Sanchez, "He has a lot of enthusiasm and will be a positive role model for the kids."
“My goal [as head coach] is to create an environment to get them to play, have the opportunities to stay eligible and win,” said Sanchez.
After meeting with the team, Sanchez got them started with optional conditioning this past week. He will begin practice on Monday, Feb. 1.
“When I was in high school I never knew what I had to do to get to the next level,” said Sanchez. “I would like to give them [my players] the tools to pursue baseball at the next level.”
In its 14-year history, the Eagles have had one winning season. That season, they made their only appearance in the Central Coast Section playoffs. In the 2009 campaign, the Eagles' went 4-23 overall.
The Eagles' open the season Wednesday, Feb. 24 at home against Soledad High School. They begin Tri County League play on Saturday, Mar. 13 against San Benito High School.
