CSUMB Runners Compete in 5th Annual Mud Run

SEASIDE, Calif. – Members of the Cal State Monterey Bay cross country team joined 2,000 runners in the 5th Annual Big Sur Mud Run presented by the Big Sur International Marathon in cooperation with the U.S. Army Garrison-Presidio of Monterey and Cal State University Monterey Bay last Saturday, Mar. 27.

The approximate six-mile course consisted of three miles on paved roads and three through trails on the former Fort Ord. The Otters had to trek through four mud pits, a five-foot wall and military obstacles. The Presidio of Monterey had soldiers from the 229th Military Intelligence Battalion to insure the recruits completed there allotted push ups and military drills.

CSUMB had three female runners place in the 20-29 year old division. Sophomore #Tabbitha Bailey# from Colfax placed first (42:57) in the division while finishing third in the overall race. Junior #Keri Zaro# from Hayward finished (44:23) just two seconds shy of Bailey for second and placed fourth overall. Placing third (46:39) in the division was junior #Marie Beard# from Escalon, finishing fifth overall.

The Otter men represented the 15-19 and the 20-29 year old divisions. Sophomore #Travis Nelson# from Lancaster crossed the line second in the 15-19 year-old division at 46:37 and was good for a 41st overall. Sophomore #Alex Olson# from Palmdale also placed second in the 20-29 year old division with a time of 38:04 which allowed him to finish fifth overall. 

A percentage of the proceeds from the event help support student-athlete scholarships at CSUMB.

The Mud Run presented by the Big Sur International Marathon  takes place on the last Sunday in March annually.
