CSUMB Runners Compete In Big Sur Marathon And 5K

SEASIDE, Calif.
– Junior #Fabian Rangel# and sophomore #Tabbitha Bailey#, members of the Cal State Monterey Bay cross country team, took part in the 25th running of the Big Sur International Marathon, the largest rural marathon in the world, on Sunday. Freshman #Mackenzie Morgan# won the 15-18 division in the 5K race with a time of 22:47.

Rangel finished the 26.2-mile in 2:47:30, placing 11th overall and among men while third in his division (25-29).  Bailey crossed the finish line in 4:01:19 to take eighth out of 83 women in her division (20-24) and placed 802nd out of 3448 runners, 194th among women.

Morgan ran along side six members of the Otter women's cross country team in the 5K race that had 792 participants on Sunday. 

Sophomores #Krista Sornborger# set the pace with a time of 22:10, placing 131 overall, 43 among all females, second in her division (19-24).  Following on her tail was junior #Keri Zaro# registering a time of 22:54; placing 143 overall, 49 among all women and fourth in her division. Sophomore #Hayley Tharp# crossed the line at 22:56; placing 145 overall, 51 among women and fifth in her division (19-24).

Junior #Marie Beard# clocked in at 23:01; placing 147 overall, 52 among all women and sixth in her division. Sophomore #Camille Sierra# finished in 23:54; placing 167 overall, 60 among all women and seventh in her division. Freshman #Marissa Aguilar# concluded the Otter runners with a time of 24:11; placing 174 overall, 64 among all women and eighth in her division.

Sornborger, Zaro, Tharp, Beard, Sierra and Aguilar competed in the 19-24 division.

Morgan placed 140 overall and 47 among all women.

“The women just get it,” said head coach Bob Sevene.

Senior #Alex Olson# was joined by future CSUMB runner James Dunn in the 5k race.  Olson finished in 19:23; placing 69 overall, 54 among all men and 10 in his division (19-24). Dunn followed with a time of 19:33; placing 72 overall, 56 among all men and third in his division (15-18).

This year's Big Sur Marathon featured runners from all 50 states along with 29 countries being represented. For a complete list of the results, visit the Big Sur International Marathon website.
