SEASIDE, Calif.
– After a week of two practices a day, the Cal State Monterey Bay fall sport teams are ready to tackle the art of juggling classes, homework, practices and games.

The NCAA Division II adopted a “Life in the Balance” package for 2010.  This means that the CSUMB fall sport teams would have only one week of two practices a day rather than two weeks like previous years.

The Otter volleyball squad has been working both on the court, in the weight room and out on the track.

“I am impressed with the commitment the players have had this summer with their workouts,” said head volleyball coach #Jody Garry#. “The leadership on the team is strong and the freshman class is solid mentally.”

Volleyball opens the 2010 season with the Otter Classic on Sept 3-4 welcoming Notre Dame de Namur, Colorado State-Pueblo and William Jessup.

The cross country teams have been hitting the trails in the afternoon.

“After a week of team training, I am feeling very good about the teams' futures,” said new head cross country coach #Greg Rhines#. “The women's team looks very promising for this season. I am very impressed with their work ethic and commitment to getting more competitive as individuals and as a team. We are going after schools in the CCAA this season. We have a strong core of returning student-athletes on the men's team. We will be building the men's program into a force for 2011, one race at a time. It begins this season, it begins now"!

The cross country teams travel to Millbrae on Saturday, Sept. 4 to compete in the Notre Dame de Namur Invitational.

The CSUMB soccer teams have been practicing in the mornings and afternoons this week.

"The men's team has come together quite nicely," said head men's and women's soccer coach #Artie Cairel#.  "The new players have joined in very well.  To have players from top clubs is always exciting and we are very much looking forward to a good year."

"The camaraderie and bonds being created on the women's team is very exciting," Cairel said. "The players are truly making strides with each session coming together as a team and competitors.  We have some small injuries but it has created a sense of unity to get better."

The women's soccer team's home opener is on Thursday, Sept. 2 against Menlo College at 2 p.m. at the Otter Soccer Complex.  The men's squad takes on NCAA Division I San Jose State on Friday, September 3 at Spartan Stadium at 7 p.m.
