SEASIDE, Calif. - Junior #Rheann Fall# set a school record with 29 kills to lead the Cal State Monterey Bay women's volleyball team to a five-set victory over No. 11 UC San Diego on Friday night at the Kelp Bed. The final scores were 29-27, 25-22, 18-25, 15-25 and 15-12.
The Otters improve to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action while the Tritons fall to 5-3, 2-2 in conference play.
In a match with 40 tied scores and 13 lead changes, the Otters finished with six aces and 14 blocks to record the first victory over UCSD in program history.
"This win shows the hard work and dedication that our players have put in the four years," said head coach #Jody Garry#. "It is not about just one night, it is about the six a.m. training, its about summer commitment and its about leaders like #Dana Grimm# and #Kami Ward# who have put the time in to help the team raise their expectations. It is all about expectations."
On top of 29 kills, Fall had a team-high 21 digs and four aces. Junior #Lauren Shacklock# added 10 kills and junior #Tiffaney Riggs# tied a career-high with eight blocks. Sophomore #Monique Sena# recorded her first double-double of the season with 39 assists and 11 digs.
The Otters host No. 24 Cal State East Bay on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.
