Junior forward Ashley Morgan pulled down a team season-high 12 rebounds Saturday at San Francisco State.
BOX SCORE
SAN FRANCISCO — After a strong performance in a 33–point win Friday night at Sonoma State, the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team couldn't get anything to go its way Saturday night in a 49–38 loss to San Francisco State in The Swamp.
CSUMB (3–1, 1–1 CCAA) turned the ball over 15 times in the first half alone, shot 26 percent from the floor (including a 2-of-20 performance from beyond the arc) and 62 percent from the line. Even the typically stalwart Otter defense, which held its third opponent in four game to less than 50 points, couldn't overcome those numbers.
Despite a slow start, the Otters were holding their own late in the first half, leading 19–12 with 4:52 remaining in the period. But that's when CSUMB ran smack into an epic cold streak. The Otters made just one of their next 16 shots from the field, missing 12 in a row at one point, as the Gators embarked on a 25–2 run to take control of the game.
With SFSU leading by 16 at 39–23, the Otters finally found their shooting touch. CSUMB's best run got them to within nine at 43-34 with 5:34 to play. Two consecutive stops gave the Otters chances to get closer, but three missed shots and a shot clock violation took the wind out of the comeback effort.
No Otter scored more than senior
Brittani Jefferson (Palmdale/Antelope Valley College), who finished with eight points. Junior forward
Ashley Morgan (Rohnert Park/Santa Rosa JC) grabbed a team season-high 12 boards to lead CSUMB on the glass.
Farrah Shokoor led all players with 15 points and four steals for SFSU (3-3, 2-2 CCAA).
CSUMB will take a break from CCAA action to play its final nonconference game of the season when it host PacWest Conference rival Academy of Art Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
