SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is conducting a canned food drive this week in conjunction with a conference wide drive by the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

“SAAC is committed to serving the community,” said women's basketball and SAAC Co-President Jessica Fontenette. “Our goal is to collect over 150 cans this year, more than we did last year when we finished second among CCAA schools.”

CSUMB's SAAC will be collecting the canned foods from Feb. 6-12 at Otter athletic events and select locations on campus. CSUMB's basketball teams will have games on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 10-11) and the baseball team has a four-game, three-day series on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 10-12).

Fans who donate canned food items at the events will receive a raffle ticket for each item donated for a chance to win Otter gear. Winners will be picked the men's and women's basketball games on Feb. 11 and at the baseball game on Feb. 12.

Receptacles to collect the cans will be at all CSUMB athletic events during the drive and are also in the CSUMB Athletics' main office as well as the Dining Commons, Student Center, Library and Admissions (Building 47).

“The purpose of the CCAA Canned Food Drive is to both collect canned goods and raise awareness to the prevalence of hunger in our communities," CCAA Commissioner Robert J. Hiegert said. “With that in mind, each SAAC will become informed about hunger in its community, and conducting awareness-raising events is in integral component.”

CSUMB will be donating the collected food items to the Food Bank of Monterey County.
