BOX SCORE
SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team opened its 2012 campaign on a high note, sweeping Dominican (NY) College 25-16, 25-15, 25-10 in match two of the 2012 Otter Classic Friday morning in The Kelp Bed. It was the season opener for both teams.

CSUMB won its 10th consecutive nonconference match dating back to the 2009 season and its ninth in a row in Otter Classic play, also dating back to 2009.

With half of the CSUMB roster appearing in a collegiate uniform for the first time, it came as little surprise that both veterans and newcomers played roles in the win. Among the returners, junior middle blocker Lily Staight (Vista/Rancho Buena Vista HS) led all attackers with 13 kills and a .571 attack percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Julia Ashen (North Salinas HS) chipped in 12 kills. Jessica Malcolm (Lodi HS) represented the freshman class with 10 kills.

Courtney Heard led Dominican with seven kills while Whitney Ranger chipped in 11 digs.

CSUMB rarely trailed, falling behind by more than one point just once when Dominican took the first two points of the second set. Dominican's latest lead came at 7-6 on a Ranger kill early in the first set.
