No. 23 MSU-Mankato Thwarts Otter Upset Bid In Four

Julia Ashen led all attackers with 16 kills Friday night against No. 23 Minnesota State-Mankato.

CSUMB rolls to first set victory before MSU takes three straight for the win

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team had upset on its mind early, but No. 23 Minnesota State–Mankato rallied to spoil Friday's Otter Classic feature match. The Mavericks dropped the first set before storming back to take a 17-25, 25-11, 25-14, 25-18 win  in The Kelp Bed.

The win snapped a 10-match nonconference winning streak for CSUMB (1-1 overall) dating back to 2009. MSU finished the first day of Otter Classic play 2-0.

Sophomore outside hitter Julia Ashen (North Salinas HS) led all attackers with 16 kills. Middle blockers Lily Staight (Vista/Buena Vista HS) and Rachel Clardy (Westminster/Marina HS) chipped in five blocks apiece for the Otters.

Chel Fogarty led MSU with a 14-kill, 14-dig double-double. Jill Storlie added 12 kills and a match-high eight block assists.

“I thought our (sweep) against Dominican in the morning was a great start for us,” said CSUMB Head Coach Jody Garry. “Dominican was scrappy and played good defense and challenged us in that way.

“But tonight's match was a huge part of the reason we brought Mankato to this tournament,” she continued. “They are a nationally-ranked team and that's exactly who we wanted to face. We came out and executed well, but then they made adjustments and executed and we didn't respond. We'll learn from that.”

The Otters came out on fire, leading virtually wire-to-wire in the first set behind five kills each by Ashen freshman Jessica Malcolm (Lodi HS). But MSU stifled the Otter dynamic duo from that point, rolling to easy wins in the next two sets to take the match by the scruff of the neck.

CSUMB rallied in a tight fourth set that was still a two-point game as late as 19-17 before a 6-1 Maverick run ended the affair.

The Otters continue tournament play Saturday, facing Maryville University at 3 p.m. They'll close the Otter Classic with a 7 p.m. feature match against west region rival Alaska-Anchorage.
