Brittani Jefferson led all players with 16 points and eight rebounds Friday night vs. Cal Poly Pomona.
BOX SCORE
SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team struggles from behind the arc proved costly for a second consecutive outing, allowing Cal Poly Pomona to rally in the second half for a 52–47 victory Friday night in The Kelp Bed.
After going 2-for-17 in regulation during last Saturday's triple overtime loss at Cal State L.A., CSUMB (6-3, 3-3 CCAA) went 0-for-10 against the Broncos. Nevertheless, the always stalwart Otter defense held Cal Poly (6-5, 4-3) mostly in check, allowing the ice cold Otter offense to forge a 41-34 lead on a short
Holly Holcomb (Ventura/Buena HS) jumper with less than eight minutes to play.
But CSUMB didn't score for the next 6:47 and the Broncos went on a 14-0 run during that stretch to take their biggest lead of the game, 48-41, with 78 ticks left.
Four consecutive Otter free throws cut the deficit back to three points at 48-45 with 50 seconds remaining and a
Jessica Fontenette (Chino Hills/Bishop Amat) steal 15 seconds later gave the Otters the ball with a chance to tie. But they turned the ball over on the ensuing possession and Cal Poly went 4-for-4 from the line in the final 18 seconds to seal the win.
Brittani Jefferson (Palmdale/Antelope Valley College) led both teams with 16 points and eight rebounds for CSUMB.
Gabby Munsch (Lodi/Cal State San Marcos) came off the bench to add 10 points.
Jennifer Bryant (14 points) and Mian Dingle (10) reached double figures for Cal Poly.
The Otters will look to snap a rare two-game losing streak Saturday when they host Humboldt State in The Kelp Bed for a 5:30 p.m. tip. Humboldt fell at Cal State East Bay Friday night, 66-54.
GO OTTERS!
