BELMONT, Calif. — Those who thought the
Kerri Nakamoto (
@CoachKNakamoto) era of Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball meant run–and–gun was the new mantra after the Otters scored a school–record 98 points in their season opener need to think again. The Otters improved to 3–0 Sunday by once again riding a dominant defense to a 53–38 win over Notre Dame de Namur in Gleason Gym.
Combined with Saturday's 57–45 win over Southwest Minnesota State, the Otter defense has allowed the third fewest points in consecutive games (83) in school history. Only the 2010–11 Otters, who allowed consecutive totals of 82 and the school record of 61, have done better.
CSUMB's 3–0 start marks the fourth consecutive season in which the Otters have won three straight out of the gate. Only once before have they done better, when the 2010–11 team opened with 16 consecutive victories.
Sunday's game was never in doubt. The Otters needed less than six minutes to open the game with a 13–1 run. NDNU (1–3 overall) answered with two straight buckets, but a
Victoria Dorn (Marina/Seaside HS) 3–pointer 12 seconds later pushed the led back to 11 and the Argonauts never got within single digits of the lead again.
The Otter lead was 16 at the half, 29–13, and grew as big as 25 points late before NDNU ended with a 10–0 run against the CSUMB reserves to bring the final margin to 15.
The CSUMB reserves did most of the heavy lifting, combining to score 35 of the team's 53 points and grab 25 of the team's season–high 49 rebounds. Senior
Chezla Self (Sacramento/SJ Delta College) led the bench with 12 points while
Alexous Robinson (Dublin/Ohlone College) chipped in 11 points and a game–high seven rebounds.
"It was great to come away with two wins this weekend," said Nakamoto. "Everyone on the roster was a contributor today and it was fun to see different lineups together. We're looking forward to having a little break to sharpen up things before conference play"
CSUMB will get a well–deserved break as it takes two weekends off before returning to action by opening CCAA play against Cal State L.A. on Friday, Dec. 6 in The Kelp Bed.
GO OTTERS!
