SEASIDE, Calif. — Slow starts have become a bit too familiar to the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team this season. Saturday night, the Otters took it to a new level, missing 19 of their first 20 shots from the floor as Cal State East Bay ran away early to take a 64–46 decision in The Kelp Bed.
CSUMB (3-4, 0-4 CCAA) converted just one field goal and two free throws in the first 13 minutes as East Bay steadily built a 29–4 lead. The Pioneer lead grew to as much as 32 points (45-15) early in the second half before the Otters found a groove. They out–scored East Bay 31–19 over the final 14:53 to make the final a little more respectable.
Junior guard
Nikki Beckman (Dublin/Ohlone College) led CSUMB with 14 points. Senior forward
Holly Holcomb (Ventura/Buena HS) just missed the first Otter double–double of the season, scoring eight points to go along with a game–high 11 rebounds.
Danielle Peacon led East Bay (6–5, 3–1) with 20 points and nine rebounds.
CSUMB will take the week off for the Christmas holiday, returning to action to host Humboldt State on Jan. 3.
