BOX SCORE

SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team killed two birds with one stone Friday evening, bouncing back from Tuesday's upset loss and avenging an early-season triple overtime loss by downing Cal State L.A. 64-52 in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB (14-4, 11-4 CCAA) got big contributions from several players, led by senior forward Brittani Jefferson (Palmdale/Antelope Valley JC), who posted her second double-double in three games by leading both teams with 13 points and 10 rebounds. The Otters also got 12 points on a personal record-tying four three-pointers from senior guard Stefanie Corgel (Manhattan Beach/UCSB).

Kaija Powell came off the bench to lead CSULA (14-8, 9-6) with 13 points. Senior guard Tessondra Williams, who entered the night leading the CCAA in scoring at 19.5 points per game, added 12 points, but the stingy Otter defense held her to just 4-of-16 shooting from the field.

Cal State L.A. scored on its opening possession, but it proved to be the only lead the Golden Eagles would hold all night. After an Alyssa Hanson jumper tied the game at 6-6 five minutes in, a pair of Gabby Munsch (Lodi/CSU San Marcos) free throws on the next CSUMB possession gave the Otters a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

A late Danielle Padilla (Salem, Ore./Chemeketa CC) three got the Otter lead to 10 at halftime, 31-21, and the Golden Eagles wouldn't get closer than seven the rest of the way. CSUMB built its lead to as many as 14 several times in the second half before settling on the 12-point final margin.

In addition to Jefferson and Corgel, the Otters got 10 points and six assists from sophomore guard Nikki Beckman (Dublin/Ohlone College) and 10 rebounds from junior forward Holly Holcomb (Ventura/Buena HS).

CSUMB closes its five-game homestand Saturday night when it hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills at 5:30 p.m. in The Kelp Bed.
