Cold shooting, early turnovers fatal in 67-51 loss to UCSD

BOX SCORE

ONTARIO, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team couldn't overcome a sluggish start as UC San Diego led most of the way en route to a 67–51 win in the semifinals of the CCAA Championship Tournament Friday afternoon at Citizens Business Bank Arena.

UCSD (21–10 overall) advances to play Cal State L.A. in the title game Saturday evening. CSUMB (19–8) will head home to await the announcement of the NCAA Tournament field Sunday at 7 p.m. The Otters entered the week No. 4 in the West Region and are in solid position to receive a third consecutive NCAA Tournament bid.

The Otters turned the ball over on their first four possessions to set the tone for the game. They compounded their problems with a miserable shooting performance in which they converted just 27 percent from the field (18–of–65) and 17 percent (4–of–23) from beyond the arc.

Nevertheless, CSUMB hung tough through its early struggles, taking its final lead of the game at 10–9 on a Holly Holcomb (Ventura/Buena HS) layup midway through the first half. But UCSD responded with a 15–2 run to open its first double–digit lead, 24–12, by the final media timeout of the first half.

The Otters were still within single digits at the half, trailing 30–21, but an Erin Dautremont jumper on the first possession of the second half got the Triton lead back to 11 points and that's as close as the Otters would get for the duration.

Dautremont led all scorers with 28 points for UCSD, the most scored by an Otter opponent this season. Daisy Feder added 23 points and a game–high seven rebounds for UCSD.

Senior forward Gabby Munsch (Lodi/CSU San Marcos) came off the bench to lead CSUMB with 15 points and six boards. Sophomore guard Angelique Bailey (Fontana/Etiwanda HS) also came off the bench and passed a game–high four assists.
