SEASIDE, Calif. — For the second time in its last three games, the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team came tantalizingly close to victory, only to fall at the very end. This time, the Otters had the final possession but couldn't get the winning shot to fall in a 47–46 loss to Cal State San Bernardino Friday night in Coussoulis Arena.

Junior guard Jenna Bandy (Thousand Oaks HS) left an impression on former Head Coach Renee Jimenez, now in her first season at San Bernardino, by scoring a game–high 17 points. She scored 10 in the second half to help the Otters overcome a 7–point deficit to tie the game at 45–45 late.

Rebounding, specifically offensive rebounding, proved decisive in this game. San Bernardino out–rebounded the Otters 39–27, including 17 offensive rebounds, leading 13 second–chance points for the Coyotes.

Neither team shot particularly well from the floor, though the Otters found their 3–point stroke late and finished the game 6–of–12 from beyond the arc. But in keeping with a season–long theme, another CSUMB opponent shot more than twice as many free throws as the Otters. Friday night, San Bernardino made 11–of–15 from the stripe compared to just 4–of–6 for CSUMB, to offset the Otter shooting edge.

Nevertheless, the Otters stayed close enough to tie the game at 45–45 on consecutive treys from Bandy and Ashley Morgan (Rohnert Park/Santa Rosa JC). After an Alicia Mack jumper regained the lead for the Coyotes with 66 seconds to play, the Otters had a chance to tie 29 seconds later with Holly Holcomb (Ventura/Buena HS) at the line to shoot a 1–and–1. But Holcomb made just one to leave the Otters down 47–46.

The Otter defense came up with a big stop and got the ball back with 6.5 seconds remaining and called timeout to set up the final play. Angelique Bailey (Fontana/Etiwanda HS) took the ball coast–to–coast but couldn't make a short jumper. Morgan grabbed the offensive board but could get her follow attempt off before the buzzer sounded.
CSUMB will continue its 4–game roadtrip by playing at UC San Diego Saturday night in La Jolla.
