LA JOLLA, Calif. — It was a bit of déjà vu for the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team Saturday night. For the second consecutive season, the Otters followed a near upset at perennial power Cal State San Bernardino with a listless effort at UC San Diego. This time, the result was a 93–70 setback in RIMAC Arena.
CSUMB got a career–high 19 points from senior
Kris Gallop (Vallejo/Los Medanos College), but found little else to celebrate. UCSD out–rebounded the Otters 42–32 and worked its offense for 12 3–pointers. For its part, the Otter offense turned the ball over a season–low eight times, but made a season low three 3–pointers and missed a season–high 19 free throws.
The Otters led just once, briefly in the first half, before the Tritons pushed their advantage to 12 points, 44–32, at the break. CSUMB never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way.
In addition to Gallop, freshman
Evan Zeller (Mission Viejo HS) reached double figures for the second consecutive night, finishing with 10. Also of note, sophomore guard
Dolyn Hall (San Marcos/Mission Hills HS), playing next door to his hometown, notched his first collegiate field goal and first rebound.
CSUMB will look to rebound when it concludes its 4–game roadtrip next weekend with games at Cal State Stanislaus Friday (Jan. 17) and Chico State Saturday (Jan. 18). The Otters return home to host San Francisco State on Jan. 24 in The Kelp Bed.
GO OTTERS!
