CHICO, Calif. — For 30 minutes, the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team went toe–to–toe with defending CCAA champion Chico State. But a dreaded 10–minute dry spell proved to be the difference as the Wildcats pulled away late to win 62–48 Friday night in Acker Gym.

As has been their pattern over the last 10 games, the Otters started okay, grabbing an early 6–4 lead, then absolutely could buy a bucket for a 10–minute span, going 0–for–13 from the floor to allow Chico a 17–0 run from which the Otters couldn't recover.

The Otters trimmed the Wildcat advantage to 28–18 by halftime before opening the second half on a 7–0 run to pull to within three points, 28–25, with possession, coming out of the break.

But the Otters would get no closer as Chico went a sizzling 20–of–23 from the free–throw line to slowly extend its lead down the stretch.

CSUMB got a career–high 17 points from senior guard Chezla Self (Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta College), the fifth highest scoring game by an Otter this season. Angelique Bailey (Fontana/Etiwanda HS) added 11 points and a team–best three assists.

The Otters return home to play their next two games, beginning Friday, Jan. 24, when San Francisco State visits The Kelp Bed. CSUMB also will host Sonoma State Saturday night before embarking on their second 4–game road trip of the season.
