SEASIDE, Calif. — The Call State Monterey Bay women's basketball team got off to its fastest start since opening day, but the already short–handed Otters lost another key player in the second half and San Francisco State held on late for a 66–59 win Friday night in The Kelp Bed.
Angelique Bailey (Fontana/Etiwanda HS) and
Alexous Robinson (Dublin/Ohlone College) led CSUMB with 11 points apiece.
Ashley Morgan (Rohnert Park/Santa Rosa JC) added a game–high 12 rebounds.
But none of that was enough to offset a red–hot Angela Van Sickel, who led all scorers with 25 points for SFSU.
CSUMB scored 33 points in the first half and took a 33–29 lead into intermission. But with the Otters leading 40–37, senior forward
Holly Holcomb (Ventura/Buena HS) received a pair of controversial technical fouls five minutes into the second half. SFSU's Leticia Galarza made the ensuing four free throws and CSUMB never led again.
Playing without yet another of its top players, CSUMB hung tough, tying the game again at 48–48 on a long
McKenna Hill (Ventura/St. Bonaventure HS) jumper five minutes later. The game stayed tight for the duration with SFSU making three free throws in the final 37 seconds to quell the final Otter comeback attempt.
CSUMB closes its brief 2–game homestand Saturday night with it hosts Sonoma State in the opening game of a men's/women's doubleheader. Tip–off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
GO OTTERS!
