SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team saw its 2–game win streak snapped at the buzzer Saturday night when visiting Sonoma State rallied from a double–digit deficit in the second half for a 68–66 win in The Kelp Bed.
CSUMB (6–9, 4–8 CCAA) got 15 points apiece from freshman
Evan Zeller (Mission Viejo HS) and junior
Ryan Nitz (Rancho Cucamonga/Chaffey College) but saw those efforts offset by a 24–point, 15–rebound double–double from Sonoma senior Justin Herold.
The Otters led for most of the first half, racing to a 37–25 halftime lead (their biggest halftime lead of the season) and holding that lead for the first six minutes of the second half. That's when the Seawolves rallied, finally grabbing the lead at 42–41 on an Isaiah Brown layup.
The lead changed hands 11 times down the stretch. The Otters forged the only tie of the second half when a Zeller 3–pointer knotted the score at 66–66 with 2:46 remaining.
Greg Anderson (Murietta/Palomar College) tied up Herold under the basket on Sonoma's next possession to give the Otters a chance to reclaim the lead, but they missed a pair of layups before a scramble knocked the ball out of bounds and gave possession back to Sonoma. Herold made a layup of his own to give Sonoma what would prove to be the final points of the game.
CSUMB got a pair of late defensive stops but couldn't take advantage, missing two 3–pointers that could have given them the win.
The Otters hit the road to begin their second 4–game trip of the month next weekend at Cal State Dominguez Hills (Jan. 31) and Cal State L.A. (Feb. 1). The Otters return home to host UC San Diego Feb. 15 in The Kelp Bed.
GO OTTERS!
