SEASIDE, Calif. — Unable to unlock the disciplined Cal Poly Pomona zone, Cal State Monterey Bay shot a season–low 22.9 percent from the floor Saturday night to close its 3–game homestand with a 60–40 loss to the Broncos in The Kelp Bed.
For its part, CSUMB (4–5, 2–4 CCAA) gave its best defensive performance of the season and held Cal Poly (7–3, 5–1) to just 21 first–half points, but the Broncos found an offensive rhythm in the second half to pull away after leading by just one at the break.
The Otters got a game–high 15 points from sophomore guard
Alex Fertig (Fresno/Buchanan HS), who is the only CSUMB player to reach double figures in all nine games.
Kris Gallop (Vallejo/Los Medanos College) led all players on the glass for the second consecutive night with seven rebounds.
Neither team proved able to generate an offensive foothold in the first 20 minutes. The Otter defense forced 10 Pomona turnovers in the period to limit Cal Poly to 21 points while the Broncos held the Otters to 7–of–28 shooting from the floor to hold CSUMB to 20 points.
An
Evan Zeller (Mission Viejo HS) 3–pointer tied the game at 23–23 just after the restart, but Pomona responded with an 18–3 run to take control at 41–26 midway through the second half. The Otters never got closer than 10 for the balance of the game.
CSUMB hits the road to begin a 4–game trip next week. The Otters will play at Cal State San Bernardino Friday and at UC San Diego Saturday. They return home Jan. 24 to host San Francisco State.
