SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team simply couldn't get shots to fall from anywhere on the floor Saturday and that spelled doom as CCAA frontrunner Cal Poly Pomona pulled away late in the first half then cruised to 75–43 win in The Kelp Bed.
CSUMB (3–6, 0–6 CCAA) shot 28 percent from the floor, 20 percent from 3–point range and 17 percent (1–of–6) from the line. Pomona (8–2, 5–1) didn't shoot much better, but out–scored the Otters from the line 20–1, including a 14–0 edge in the first half.
The Otters opened the game 1–for–12 and 3–for–20 from the floor, yet a solid defense effort had them within four at 23–19 with just over three minutes remaining in the period. Pomona finished the half on a 12–3 run in the 2:56 around the interval to open their its double–digit lead. CSUMB never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way.
For the first time this season, no Otter scored in double figures. Freshman
Victoria Dorn (Marina/Seaside HS) led CSUMB with eight points. Jada Blackwell led Cal Poly with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
CSUMB takes to the road for its next four games, starting with a showdown against Cal State San Bernardino and former Head Coach Renee Jimenez Friday night in San Bernardino.
