RIVERSIDE, Calif. — No. 24 Cal Baptist knocked down 12 of 18 3–point attempts in the first half, raced to a 57–35 halftime lead, and didn't look back in handing visiting Cal State Monterey Bay a 106–79 setback Saturday night in Van Dyne Gym.
CSUMB (1–1 overall) didn't do itself any favors, making just 2–of–11 from the free–throw line in the opening period and just 9–of–25 for the game. But combined with the sizzling shooting of CBU (2–0), that was enough to outweigh several positives for the Otter, including 42 rebounds, 19 assists, and just 12 turnovers.
"We ran into a buzzsaw tonight," said CSUMB Head Coach
Rob Bishop (@Coach_RBishop). "After not shooting well last night, Cal Baptist came out on fire. We needed to hit our free throws early and didn't. That made the barrage worse. The good thing was we battled in the second half but just couldn't get over the hump."
Senior forward
Greg Anderson (Murietta/Palomar JC) led the Otters with a career–high 22 points and eight rebounds.
Alex Fertig (Fresno/Buchanan HS) added 16 points while
Patrick Lefiti (Bay Point/Los Medanos College) chipped in a game–high seven assists.
The Otters return to The Kelp Bed for their 2014–15 home opener Wednesday night against Pac West Conference rival Dominican University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
