ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — Defense took center stage once again for the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team as the Otters led wire–to–wire in a 48–45 win over Sonoma State Friday night in The Wolves' Den. It marked the seventh time this season and second game in a row that the Otters held an opponent to 50 or fewer points.
Senior guard
Chezla Self (Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta College), who shared team–high honors with 12 points, knocked down a short jumper on the first possession of the game and the Otters never trailed or shared the lead for the duration.
Led by seven first–half points from
Jenna Bandy (Thousand Oaks HS), CSUMB raced to an 26–12 lead. But the Otters went scoreless over the final 6:16 of the period, opening the door for Sonoma to pull to within 26–21 at intermission. By the time four minutes had elapsed in the second half, the Seawolves pulled to within one point for the first and only time at 32–31.
Self and
McKenna Hill (Ventura/St. Bonaventure HS) took over from there, scoring 12 of the next 14 Otter points to expand CSUMB's advantage back to double digits at 46–35. Sonoma chipped away over the final six minutes but couldn't get closer than the 3–point final margin.
In addition to Self, Hill chipped in a season–high 12 points. Playing in her hometown of Rohnert Park for the final time,
Ashley Morgan (Santa Rosa JC) pulled down a team–high eight rebounds.
With the win, CSUMB improved to 7–17 and 4–17 in the CCAA. By completing the season sweep of Sonoma State (4–21, 3–18), the Otters clinched 11th place in the conference.
CSUMB will look to finish the season the same way it started—with a 3–game winning streak—when it plays its season finale Saturday at San Francisco State.
GO OTTERS!
