SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team simply dug itself a hole from which it couldn't find a way out Friday night, opening the game by missing 15 of its first 16 attempts from the floor in a 70–61 loss to visiting Cal State L.A. in The Kelp Bed. Once the Otters righted the ship, they outplayed the Golden Eagles, but a 15–point deficit proved to be too much on this night.
Individually, the Otters got the first career double–double by
Jenna Bandy (Thousand Oaks HS), who scored 15 points and pulled down a career–high 10 rebounds. Junior forward
Jazmine Johnson (Garden Grove/Santa Ana College) added her second consecutive double–double, finishing with 13 points and 10 boards.
Aside from their frigid shooting, the Otters played a solid statistical game. They out–rebounded the Golden Eagles 40–39 and won the turnover battle by three.
The Golden Eagles, who entered the night as the league's worst 3–point shooting team, shot a season–high 40 percent (6–of–15) from beyond the arc in this one. Junior Franeka Hall, who hadn't made more than one 3–pointer in a game as a Golden Eagle and began the night shooting 19 percent from long range, made 4–of–6 as part of her career–high 21–point night.
The Otters will close their brief 2–game homestand Saturday night when they host CCAA contender Cal State Dominguez Hills for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
GO OTTERS!
