ARCATA, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team opened Saturday's game at Humboldt State shooting 1-for-14 from the field. Against the CCAA's leading team, that spelled disaster as the Lumberjacks ran their winning streak to 13 games with a 76-55 win in Lumberjack Arena.
The Otters shot just 19 percent (7-for-37) from the field in the first 20 minutes—its lowest opening half of the season—as Humboldt took a 39-20 lead into the break. The teams played a relatively even second half, but CSUMB never got closer than 18 points after the break.
Evan with the slow start, CSUMB clawed its way back to within 18-12 midway through the first half, but that was a temporary speed bump for Humboldt, which improved to 14-1 overall and 10-0 in conference play.
CSUMB got 10 points and six rebounds apiece from both
Jenna Bandy (Thousand Oaks HS) and
Kaila Turner (Pasadena/L.A. Valley College).
On the plus side, the game's margin gave CSUMB a chance to play the entire roster and 11 different players scored in the game. Freshman
Justice Bennett (Saugus HS) used the opportunity to score her first collegiate points.
The Otters return home to take on Cal State Stanislaus (Jan. 23) and Chico State (Jan. 24) in The Kelp Bed. Tipoff both nights will be at 5:30 p.m. as the openers of men's/women's doubleheader action.
GO OTTERS!
