POMONA, Calif. — For the third consecutive game, the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team took on a team in first place in the CCAA standings. Once again, the Otters played tough, but this time couldn't pull out the upset in a 66-59 loss at Cal Poly Pomona Friday night in Kellogg Gym.
Individually, the game was a battle of the CCAA's top two scorers between Cal Poly senior Terrence Drisdom and CSUMB sophomore
Evan Zeller (Mission Viejo HS). Zeller won that battle, 17-14, but it didn't lead to team victory this night.
The Otters lead for much of the first half before things fell apart late in the period. The Otters went 0-for-4 from the field and 1-for-6 from the line over the final 6:34 of the half as the Broncos claosed with a 12-1 run to take a 30-22 lead at intermission.
The Otters quickly righted the ship after the break and kept the second half deficit between two and six points for most of the period until the Broncos extended their lead to as many as 10 points from the free-throw line in the final minute.
In addition to Zeller,
Alex Fertig (Fresno/Buchanan HS) scored 13 points while
Patrick Lefiti (Bay Point/Los Medanos College) passed four assists. Drisdom's 14 points led Cal Poly.
CSUMB concludes its 2-game Southern Caliiornia trip with a big game Saturday at UC San Diego. The Otters return home to host San Francisco State Feb. 6 in The Kelp Bed.
GO OTTERS!
