SAN FRANCISCO — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team stepped up with the game on the line Saturday night, using a late 16–2 run to come from behind for its first CCAA win, 84–80, at San Francisco State.
CSUMB got a huge performance off the bench from
Jazmine Johnson (Garden Grove/Santa Ana College) who recorded the first Otter double–double of the season with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Both totals were season highs for the junior forward. Johnson made 10 of her 11 attempts from the floor, the best shooting night in Otter history with a minimum of 10 field goal attempts.
Sophomore
McKenna Hill (Ventura/St. Bonaventure HS) added 18 points and nine rebounds.
Jenna Bandy (Thousand Oaks HS) chipped in 12 points while
Stephanie Sack (Petaluma/Santa Rosa JC) dished six assists.
"It was a really good win for us tonight," said CSUMB Head Coach
Kerri Nakamoto (@CoachKNakamoto). "S.F. State forced us to play a little faster than we wanted at times and shot the ball really well. But we came up with big stops and scores when we needed them."
The Otters led by as many as 11 points midway through the first half. But the Gators took an unusual avenue back into the game. Although SFSU came into the game ranked last in the CCAA in 3–point shooting, the Gators got hot from beyond the arc and shot their way to the brink of victory.
The Gators made a season–best 12-of-22 from long range, including a streak in which they made 6-of-7 while turning a 5-point Otter lead into a 7-point advantage late in the game. When Cece Nguyen knocked down the final Gator trey, they led 66–59 and were on the precipice of victory.
But that's when the Otters dug deep to find their final reserve of energy. A pair of Johnson free throws got the offense rolling as the defense stepped up to deny SFSU on its next four possession. A 3–pointer from
Stephanie Sack and short jumpers from Hill and Johnson put CSUMB back on top, 68–66. A pair of Bandy free throws capped the 11–0 run and the Gators never held the ball within a possession of the lead again.
In addition to Johnson and Hill, the Otters got 12 points from Bandy and six assists from Sack.
CSUMB returns home for a pair of games next weekend when it hosts Cal State L.A. Friday and Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday. Both games will tipoff at 5:30 p.m. as the openers of men's/women's doubleheader action.
GO OTTERS!
