SEASIDE, Calif. — Devougn "Trini" Lamont, perhaps the greatest player in Cal State Monterey Bay basketball history,
passed away on the court while playing professionally in France earlier this season. Saturday, with his family, former teammates and Bill Trumbo, his head coach at CSUMB, on hand, the University will honor Lamont in a ceremony prior to its 7:30 p.m. tipoff with Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Saturday's game is a fitting one in which to honor his memory. Dominguez Hills is coached by Steve Becker, who was an Otter teammate of Lamont's.
Lamont passed away at age 30 due to a heart attack during a preseason training session with Beaujolais Basket of the French NM2 league. He played professionally in Mexico, Venezuela, Uruguay and Argentina before joining Beaujolais this season. He also played for the national team in his homeland of Trinidad and Tobago, leading T&T to an upset of Top 10 ranked Puerto Rico in the 2010 Centro Basketball Tournament.
Lamont was a unique, highly–skilled player who helped usher CSUMB into its NCAA era after transferring to the Seaside campus from the College of Marin. Despite playing just two seasons with the Otters (2005 and 2006) he still ranks No. 5 on the CSUMB career scoring list and is one of only seven players in Otter history to surpass 900 career points. He scored a then school record 580 points as a senior in 2006, a mark that still ranks No. 2 all–time at CSUMB.
