LA JOLLA, Calif. — No. 13 UC San Diego continued the best start in its NCAA Division II era Friday night, improving to 7–0 overall with an 81–62 win over Cal State Monterey Bay in RIMAC Arena.
CSUMB got a game–high 22 points from
Ryan Nitz (Rancho Cucamonga/Chaffey College) and turned the ball over a season–low five times. But the Triton offense sliced through the Otters almost at will, shooting 53 percent from the floor and 47 percent from beyond the arc.
The Otters trailed 41–30 at the half, but opened the second period on a 7–0 run to get back into the game. They had two possession with which to draw even closer but couldn't capitalize.
UCSD responded with a 24–9 run of its own over the ensuing eight minutes to put the game away.
Mateo Jones (Victorville/Silverado HS) was the only other Otter to score in double figures with 10 points. Freshman center
Gregg Polosky Danville/Sam Ramon Valley HS) added a season–high eight rebounds.
The Otters return to The Kelp Bed to close the 2015 calendar year with home games against Stanislaus State (Dec. 11) and No. 6 ranked Cal Poly Pomona (Dec. 13).
