SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team saw its postseason hopes absorb an all but fatal blow Friday night when Humboldt State took an 88-74 decision from the Otters in The Kelp Bed.
CSUMB (12–13, 8–11 CCAA) must win its remaining three games and get lots of help if it's to continue playing basketball in March. Humboldt (18-7, 12-7) all but secured a CCAA Tournament bid with the win.
Five Otters scored in double figures, led by senior forward
Greg Anderson (Murietta/Palomar College) with 16 points. CSUMB also got 13 points, six rebounds and four assists from sophomore guard
Evan Zeller (Mission Viejo HS).
The Otters raced to a 10-3 lead out of the gate and maintained an advantage for most of the game's opening nine minutes. Defensively, however, they never found an answer for the Lumberjack duo of Rakim Brown (26 points) and Allan Guei (21 points). Calvin Young added 16 points and, more importantly, 12 rebounds as Humboldt shockingly out-rebounded the Otters 38-26 on the night.
The Otters will close the home portion of their 2014-15 schedule Saturday night when they host Cal State San Bernardino for a 7:30 p.m. tip. The team will honor seniors Anderson and
Jorey Scott (Lake Tahoe/Douglas HS) in pregame ceremonies.
GO OTTERS!
