SEASIDE, Calif. — After winning in a walk Friday night, the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team saved the dramatics for Saturday, completing its first weekend sweep of the season when
Nikki Beckman (Dublin/Ohlone College) knocked down an 8-foot floater with five seconds remaining to lift the Otters over Sonoma State, 54-52.
Beckman's shot blew the roof off of The Kelp Bed, but the Otters didn't secure the win until Taylor Acosta missed the first of two free throws with 3/10ths of a second to play. She missed the second on purpose, hoping for a miracle, but
Emma Keenan (Spokane, Wash./Lewis and Clark HS) pulled down the rebound to end the affair.
Beckman played the hero, but
Jazmine Johnson (Garden Grove/Santa Ana College) and
McKenna Hill (Ventura/St. Bonaventure HS) carried the mail. Johnson set a CSUMB record with six blocked shots while recording her fourth double-double of the season by scoring 11 points and pulling down a career-high 14 rebounds.
Hill, meanwhile, led the Otters with 15 points, her fourth consecutive game in double figures.
The Otters never trailed Saturday night, but they never could put the pesky Seawolves away. After racing to a 10-3 lead out of the gate, the Otters saw Sonoma creep back to within 17-16 before a late
Jenna Bandy (Thousand Oaks HS) 3-pointer sent CSUMB to the lockerroom up 26-20.
Another Bandy three extended the Otter lead to 10, 38-28, midway through the second half before Sonoma began chipping away again. This time, the Seawolves caught all the way up when a Madison Burroughs trey made it 52-52 with 1:05 to play.
The teams traded empty possessions, with Keenan's fifth rebound giving the Otters the ball with the shot clock off and 29.7 seconds on the game clock. From there, Beckman took care of the rest.
The Otters head to the greater Los Angeles area for their next two games, beginning Friday in Carson at Cal State Dominguez Hills. CSUMB returns to The Kelp Bed for its final home games of the season Feb. 20-21.
GO OTTERS!
