SEASIDE, Calif. — One night after absolutely scorching the nets in a win over San Francisco State, the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team went liquid nitrogen cold in a heart-breaking 82-74 overtime loss to Sonoma State Saturday night in The Kelp Bed.
The win deals a blow to CSUMB's hopes of reaching the CCAA Tournament, though perhaps not a fatal one. Sonoma State, which lost to the Otters last month in Rohnert Park, moved two games in front of CSUMB with six games remaining.
The Otters built a 10-point halftime lead, 36-26, and never trailed for the game's first 29 minutes. Sonoma took its first lead at 47-46 with 11 minutes remaining, growing it to six points at 59-53 inside of seven minutes to play.
CSUMB eventually retook the lead when
Mateo Jones (Victorville/Silverado HS) stripped David Ahern for a breakaway layup that put the Otters on top 62-61. A Mike Harris 3-point play put the Seawolves back on top by two but
Marquise Washington (Los Angeles/Cerritos College) responded with the tying layup with seven seconds remaining in regulation.
The game never would have got that far if CSUMB wasn't caught in a arctic vortex of perimeter shooting. After Jones made the Otters' first 3-point attempt of the game, CSUMB shooters combined to miss 14 consecutive shots from beyond the arc, finishing regulation 1-for-15 from long range.
Patrick Lefiti (Bay Point/Los Medanos College) broke the spell on the first Otter possession of overtime to give CSUMB its final lead of the night, 67-66. A
Greg Anderson (Murietta/Palomar College) layup tied the game for the final time at 69-69. But the Otters missed their final three attempts from the field and three of their final seven shots from the free-throw line to allow Sonoma to pull ahead.
The Seawolves went 8-for-8 from the line over the final 1:45 to quash Otter comeback hopes.
Washington came off the bench to lead CSUMB with 14 points, two off his season high. Lefiti scored a season-high 11.
Evan Zeller (Mission Viejo HS) and
Alex Fertig (Fresno/Buchanan HS) each chipped in 10 while Anderson added 12 rebounds.
David Ahern scored a career-high 25 points to lead the Seawolves.
The Otters head to the greater Los Angeles area for their next two games, beginning Friday in Carson at Cal State Dominguez Hills. CSUMB returns to The Kelp Bed for its final home games of the season Feb. 20-21.
GO OTTERS!
