Men's Basketball | May 26, 2015

SEASIDE, Calif. — After three consecutive seasons of growth, the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team took three more steps along that path by adding another strong recruiting class. Head Coach Rob Bishop signed high school standouts Carter Johnson (Arcata/St. Bernard's), Gregg Polosky (Danville/San Ramon Valley HS) and Chris Porter (West Covina/South Hills HS) to NLIs for the 2015-16 season.

Johnson is a 6-1, 180 shooting guard. Polosky is a 6-10, 210 center. Porter is a 6-6, 200 forward.

In addition to this trio, the Otters will welcome back senior guard Devin Murphy (Sacramento/Sierra College), who took last season off for family reasons, and freshman guard Joe Covarrubias (Montebello/Cantwell-Sacred Heart), who sat last season while undergoing treatment for cancer.

The addition of Johnson, Polosky and Porter brings the 2015-16 Otter preseason roster to 14 student-athletes.

CARTER JOHNSON: Carter Johnson averaged 23 points, five rebounds and seven assists per game as a senior at St. Bernard's. He led the Crusader's to a Little 4 league and CIF North Coast Section Division VI titles as MVP of both the Little 4 and the North Coast Section championship game. He also earned MVP honors at all levels (freshman, JV, varsity) during his career at St. Bernard's.
COACH BISHOP SAYS: "Carter is an outstanding shooter that has taken and made big shots throughout his high school career.  His ability to stretch defenses will open the floor up for his teammates. Carter's competitiveness will help him make a successful jump from high school to the collegiate level. He wants to be the best shooter on the floor and will put the extra time in to make that happen. He is a strong student who is looking to major in either business or kinesiology."

GREGG POLOSKY: Gregg Polosky is an intriguing prospect. Polosky was the No. 19 ranked recruit by NorCal Preps. He led San Ramon Valley to the CIF Division I basketball state title and also was a top pitcher on the Wolves' highly-regarded baseball team who could pitch for CSUMB during his Otter career.
COACH BISHOP SAYS:  "Gregg has a huge upside. He is coming off winning a high school state championship in which he made clutch free throws down the stretch to help secure the win. At 6-10 We are looking for Gregg to be a shot blocking anchor for our defense this year allowing us to be more aggressive with our schemes. As he continues to improve his offensive skills he could develop into a premier post player in the CCAA. Otter fans are going to enjoy watching Gregg's development over these next few years. He is going to major in music recording."

CHRIS PORTER: Chris Porter becomes an Otter after a strong career at Irvine Valley College. He averaged 7.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game as a sophomore while earning the Lasers Most Inspirational Player award. His numbers were nearly identical as a freshman (7.7 ppg, 4.6 rpg). He prepped at South Hills High School in West Covina, where he averaged 9.7 points while leading the team with 7.6 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game as a senior in 2011-12.
COACH BISHOP SAYS: "Chris comes to us after a very successful career at Irvine Valley college. He played for an outstanding coach in Jerry Hernandez who really helped improve his all around game. Chris will called upon right away to fill the void left by Jorey Scott and Greg Anderson. His ability to score inside and out will give our offense some flexibility in the way that we use him. His ability defend and rebound will make an immediate impact. Chris will be majoring in business."
