SEASIDE, Calif. — Severe foul trouble coupled with a cold second half of free–throw shooting allowed host Cal State East Bay to rally late for a 75–66 win over Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday night in Pioneer Gym.
Freshmen guards
Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) and
Kevin Warren (Oakland/St. Mary's HS) led CSUMB with 18 points apiece. Johnson and
Julien Ducree (Rancho Cucamonga HS) led the way on the glass with seven rebounds each.
CSUMB, which dressed only eight players for the game, saw one player foul out and four others finish with four fouls. Nevertheless, the Otters still lead 50–43 when they missed eight free throws in a little more than five minutes. That played a key role in a 21–3 Pioneer run that turned the game in East Bay's favor.
THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Micah Dunhour went to the line to extend East Bay's lead to 75–66 with 23 seconds remaining.
IN A FOUL MOOD… The Otters and Pioneers were whistled for 52 total fouls (26 apiece) Saturday night, resulting in three players fouling out. Both numbers were season highs for a CSUMB game.
CAREER NIGHT FOR JOHNSON… There's no doubt that freshman guard
Jahvon Johnson would rather of had the win, but he did enjoy the best statistical night of his young collegiate career with season highs of 18 points and seven rebounds.

THE LAST WORD… "Free throws and a couple of mental lapses cost us a road win tonight. We defended well enough but couldn't hit free throws in the second half when they made a push. We played well enough to win but just couldn't close the deal." –
CSUMB Head Coach Rob Bishop
THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 3–game roadtrip by heading south to face Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday, Jan. 20 in Carson. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
GO OTTERS!
