CARSON, Calif. — If ever a CCAA road game appeared winnable, Cal State Monterey Bay's Friday night affair at Cal State Dominguez Hills fit the description. But early foul trouble to the Otters' only two post players prevented them from expanding their first half lead before even more whistle problems in the second half allowed Dominguez to pull away in the waning moments for a 64–56 win in the Torodome.
Sophomore big men
Julien Ducree (Rancho Cucamonga HS) and
Gregg Polosky (San Ramon Valley HS) each sat significant portions of the first half after earning three early fouls apiece. They each picked up a fourth foul early in the second half, allowing the Toros to quickly erase a 7–point halftime deficit.
Freshman
Kevin Warren (Sacramento/St. Mary's HS) led the Otters with 16 points. Ducree was credited with a 10–point, 12–rebound double–double, his third of the season.
THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… An Otter turnover with 23 seconds remaining gave the Toros the ball with a 64–56 lead. CSUDH dribbled out the clock from there.
A DUBIOUS STREAK CONTINUES… Since joining the NCAA for the 2004–05 season, the Otters have just one win against an NCAA Division II opponent when scoring fewer than 60 points—and that came during that inaugural NCAA campaign. With Friday night's setback, CSUMB has dropped 48 consecutive 48 NCAA Div. II games when scoring fewer than 60.
LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS:
Kevin Warren 16; REBOUNDS:
Julien Ducree 12; ASSISTS: Four Otters 1; BLOCKS: None; STEALS:
Jonquis Bouyea 2.
THE LAST WORD… "We played a great first half tonight. We just didn't have a good enough start to the second half to build on our lead. We learned a lot about what we can do to start finishing games. Execution and foul trouble will be big tomorrow." –
CSUMB Head Coach Rob Bishop
THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 3–game roadtrip by heading up I–710 to face Cal State L.A. Saturday in The Eagles Nest. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
GO OTTERS!
