LOS ANGELES — Short–handed and in foul trouble once again, the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team couldn't sustain another strong start as Cal State L.A. roared back from the free–throw line to take a 68–57 decision Saturday night in The Eagles Nest.
CSUMB led by as many as nine points in the second half. But L.A. got to the double bonus less than 10 minutes into the period, and foul problems that brought to the 8–man Otter squad once again wreaked havoc. CSUMB scored just four points from the 11–minute mark until there was just one minute remaining.
L.A.'s subsequent parade to the free throw line allowed it to shoot 20 second–half free throws, a stat that proved to be the deciding factor.
Kevin Warren (Oakland/St. Mary's HS) led CSUMB with 14 points.
Julien Ducree (Rancho Cucamonga HS) grabbed 10 boards.
THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Travis Hammond knocked down a 3–pointer with 46 seconds remaining to make it 66–55 L.A.
MR. GLASS… Julien Ducree enjoyed another strong rebounding game by finishing with 10 rebounds. It marked the sixth time this season he has reached double figures and his third such game in his last five outings.
SOMETHING IS AFOUL… CSUMB's razor–thin margin for foul trouble became an issue again as one player
(Jahvon Johnson) fouled out while two others played the final 4–plus minutes with four fouls each.
LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS:
Kevin Warren, 14; REBOUNDS:
Julien Ducree, 10; ASSISTS:
Jonquis Bouyea/
Jahvon Johnson, 2; BLOCKS:
Julien Ducree 2; STEALS: Five Otters 1.
THE LAST WORD… "Mental fatigue hit us hard tonight. It is promising that we had a chance to win a game on the road in which we really didn't play well at all. We will learn from this trip and get ready to go for this weekend." –
CSUMB Head Coach Rob Bishop
THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return home to the friendly confines of The Kelp Bed for a pair of games next weekend, begining Friday (Jan. 27) against Cal Poly Pomona.
GO OTTERS!
