POSTGAME INTERVIEW |
OTTERS vs. GATORS HIGHLIGHTS
SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay basketball team is starting to find its sea legs playing with a depleted roster. But that wasn't enough to upset No. 18 San Francisco State, which pulled away late to take an 85–77 decision Friday night in The Kelp Bed.
All eight Otters in uniform scored Friday night, with five reaching double figures. Sophomore center
Gregg Polosky (San Ramon Valley HS) led the way with 14 points. Junior
Jonquis Bouyea (Seaside HS), the lone upperclassman on the roster, added 13 points while freshman
Stephen Matthews (Sacramento HS) scored 12 points in just 14 minutes of action.
SFSU scored the final five points of the first half to take a 41–37 lead after 20 minutes. Although the Gators led by as many as 15 in the second half, it was still a 5–point game a 71–66 with more than three minutes to play, but CSUMB would get no closer.
THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… A missed tip–in attempt by the Otters led to a fastbreak layup by Chiefy Ugbaja that put SFSU up 83–71 with 47 seconds remaining..
WELCOME BACK… Back from injury,
Stephen Matthews made his first appearance since Dec. 10 at Sonoma State. He knocked down 4–of–5 from beyond the arc to total 12 points in 14 minutes.
A VISIT FROM AN OLD FRIEND… Former Otter Coley Apsay visited The Kelp Bed as the starting point guard for San Francisco State. Apsay converted 11–of–12 from the free–throw line as part of a 17–point night.

THE LAST WORD… "We scored enough points to win, but their four seniors said, 'you can't guard us' and turned the second half into a one–on–one show and we couldn't guard them." –

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude a brief 2–game homestand by hosting CCAA title contender Sonoma State Saturday at 7:30 p.m. It will be the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
