SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team gave CCAA contender Cal State Dominguez Hills all it could handle before the Toros pulled away in the closing minutes to earn a 62–48 win Saturday night in The Kelp Bed.
Dominguez Hills (12–4, 7–1 CCAA) raced to an 11–2 lead before the game was three minutes old—and twice led by as many as 13 points in the first half—but the Otters refused to go away until the Toros made 11 of 13 free–throw attempts over the final 4:47 to turn a 3–point game into a 14–point final.
After falling behind early, the Otters used a 14–5 run to catch the Toros at 16–16 midway through the first half. Dominguez Hills went up by eight at the half, but couldn't put CSUMB away as the Otters kept the Toros in their sites for most of the second half.
A short
Jenna Bandy (Thousand Oaks HS) jumper got CSUMB back to within three at 51–48 with five minutes remaining. But that's when a cold snap moved in and the Otters hit a game–ending 0–for–9 spell to spoil hopes of an upset.
Bandy led a balanced Otter effort with 10 points and four steals.
McKenna Hill (Ventura/St. Bonaventure HS) led the Otters on the glass with a career–high 10 rebounds.
Monay Lee (18 points, 11 rebounds) and Tailia Radford (12 & 15), ech posted double–doubles for Dominguez Hills.
The Otters hit the trail for their geographically longest road trip of the season when they head to opposite ends of the state to meet Cal State San Bernardino and Humboldt State Thursday and Saturday. CSUMB returns home to host Cal State Stanislaus Jan. 23.
GO OTTERS!
