ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — Once again a solid performance wasn't quite enough for the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team as host Sonoma State pulled away late to earn a 66–60 win Friday night in The Wolves Den.
CSUMB got a season–high 11 points from
Victoria Dorn (Marina/Seaside HS) and a team season–high 12 rebounds from junior
Jazmine Johnson (Garden Grove/Santa Ana College), but neither effort proved enough to earn the Otters their first conference win of the season.
The Otters led by as many as seven points midway through the first half and took their last lead, 50–48, on an
Emma Keenan (Spokane, Wash./Lewis and Clark HS) 3–pointer with 6:04 remaining in regulation. But the Seawolves responded with an 11–0 run over the ensuing five minutes to take a 59–50 lead. Despite scoring 10 points in the final 46 seconds, the Otters couldn't climb out of that hole.
"I was happy we got contributions from some people off our bench tonight. We just need more people playing well on the same night in order to pull our wins," said CSUMB Head Coach
Kerri Nakamoto (@CoachKNakamoto). "We made some runs and the game was back and forth, but we failed to get stops when we needed them most."
Johnson and Dorn both were part of the Otter reserve unit that out–scored Sonoma's bench 31–14. The Otters also got 11 rebounds from junior
Mykayla Harris (Orange/Villa Park HS), who made her first start since Nov. 23.
CSUMB will continue its 2–game trip to the other Bay area Saturday when it plays at San Francisco State. The Otters return home to host Cal State L.A. on Jan. 9 in The Kelp Bed.
GO OTTERS!
